The fire’s been extinguished and the firefighters have returned to their station. Now you’re faced with extensive fire and smoke damage and unsure which direction to turn for help. For a rapid response to your disaster, contact the fire restoration professionals at ServiceMaster by Knipper for high-quality fire and smoke damage restoration. We have helped hundreds of families and businesses with fire damage restoration and our professional, courteous and well-trained technicians are available to help you as well. In addition to letting our professionals help get you back on your feet, there are several steps you can take to speed the process of getting your life back to normal.

First Things First

Contact your insurance agent and mortgage company as soon as possible and let them know about the fire. Take photographs of the damage as you may need these to substantiate insurance claims later. Also give ServiceMaster by Knipper a call so we can prepare to provide professional and thorough fire damage restoration to your structure and belongings.

Get Permission Before Entering the Structure

First, find out if it’s safe to enter the structure. The fire department or Fire Marshal should be able to tell you if or when you can safely enter the building and what areas to avoid. If the Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation you may not be allowed into the building until the investigation is completed.

Proper Clothing and Protection Once you’re in

Before entering, put clothes on that protect you and your skin, as well as an appropriate face mask to protect from fumes or particles. Don’t forget work boots. There may be corrosive chemicals, sharp materials, glass shards or slippery areas on the floor. Do not walk on sagging floors and do not work alone. Call a friend, family member or neighbor for assistance.

Damaged items such as weakened furniture or potentially unstable structures such as stairs can cause injuries. Be very cautious when moving near them. Avoid holding, pushing or leaning against damaged structural parts of the building.

What to Remove

If possible, remove any legal documents such as contracts, passports, bank books, birth certificates, diplomas, and cash and credit cards from the property. Other items to remove include photographs, mementos, and computers. If these items are seriously soiled due to smoke damage let ServiceMaster by Knipper remove these items to professionally clean and carefully restore them to pre-fire condition.

Pack a bag with clothing, toiletries and medications to sustain you and your family for a few days. If the clothing items are not too contaminated they can be washed to remove soot and the odor of smoke. If your medications were in an area of the building that was subjected to intense heat, check with your doctor or pharmacist as these meds may have been compromised or ruined. If the weather is nice, open the windows and doors to ventilate and dry the structure.

Items that Require Disposal

Get rid of anything that is perishable and may have been contaminated by fire, smoke or fumes. To be safe, that may include everything in the cupboards or refrigerator. If a freezer has been without power for more than a few hours or if it’s clearly suffered damaged, everything in it may be suspect. If you have any doubt about food after a fire, don’t risk it—just get rid of it. If you just don’t know where to start, let ServiceMaster by Knipper take care of this for you. With years of experience and a highly trained staff of professionals, we know what can be salvaged and what should be properly disposed of.

If you try to tackle the aftermath of a fire and the resulting cleaning and restoration process on your own it can be an emotionally charged challenge filled with angst, sorrow, and endless worry. Take a deep breath and contact the staff at ServiceMaster by Knipper to help lighten the load and get your life and property in order.
