Getting Ready? Prepare for Late Summer Weather to Prevent Water Damage

August 28th, 2013 · No Comments

It’s hard to say it, but summer is coming to a close. It’s time to talk about a few of the factors that could bring about fire damage and water damage to homes and businesses in the Tri-state area of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. So, that means a couple of things for you.

  1. It’s time to enjoy the rest of summer while it is still here. Take a walk down by a local river, go to some of the upcoming local festivals, and grill out on the BBQ before it’s too cold out.
  2. Inclement and sometime harmful weather will shortly usher in the fall season.

Lightning and thunderstorms are Nature’s hard rock concerts, complete with explosive pyrotechnics, dazzling laser light displays, and plenty of rumbling bass. All of that “flash-bang -boom” also brings along a lot of downpours, strong winds and possibly some devastating tornados. Sound frightening? If you are not ready, it can be.

However, by making a few simple, necessary arrangements, you can decrease the water damage to your property and the interruption to your life. Here are some basic, severe weather related precautions:

  • Buy a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio. These can be found at large retail stores or nearby hardware shops for $20-30. This purchase will be useful for following the location and intensity of approaching storms in case of a power outage.
  • Get a hold of a few cheap flashlights and new batteries for walking around the dark hallways with all of your toes unharmed.
  • Keep your cell phone completely charged. Have a list of emergency numbers where you can find them or better yet, pre-program them into your phone.
  • Sometimes water and power services may be interrupted for hours or even days. Have some fresh water for drinking available and other water stock-piled for basic bathing and toilet flushing.
  • Fasten down or put outdoor furniture in storage before storms arrive. Forceful winds may cause them to take flight and cause damage to the furniture and other property.

Now that we’ve discussed the essentials, here are some pointers for minimizing wind damage, water damage, fire damage, and other disaster related troubles. These steps are straightforward, but particularly valuable for keeping rain water where it belongs—outside of your house. Just about anyone can do these basic preparations.

  • Keep your gutters and downspouts free of leaves and debris! As a rule, one inch of rain water will generate 620 gallons of run-off water on a 1,000 square foot roof. Unless you want to be swimming laps in your basement, you do NOT want that much water finding its way into your house.
  • Inspect your sump pump system. Many homeowners take this critical tool for granted. Many times, they believe it will be fully functional when the water comes. A simple scan of your pump can prevent costly water damages to your home or business.
  • Remember, water flows downhill. Be certain that landscaping adjacent to your house angles away from the foundation.
  • Keep low hanging tree branches cut and distant from your roof. Limbs that scrape your roof may harm shingles, lessen your roof’s useful life, and allow rain to flow into your home.
  • When the electricity goes out, use tremendous care when utilizing candles for light. The exposed flame from a candle has potential to start a fire. Better idea: purchase a few battery powered lights and lanterns. They’re a lot less dangerous and give off a lot more light.

Obviously, severe weather and its effects are unpredictable. Occasionally, despite even the most thorough preparations, you can end up with a squishy basement…or worse.
